I just saw a screening of this film last night. Starring Janeane Garofolo
and Uma Thurman, it is a wonderful film.. funny & fun, and the soundtrack
is awesome. Not only is there a new Ben Folds Five song featured on the
disc, it is also featured prominently IN THE FILM ITSELF... great placement
 in the story!

You should all check out the film (opens next Friday).. and the soundtrack,
which has great new songs from Suzanne Vega, Squeeze, Paul Weller, Cowboy
Junkies.... and of course Ben Folds Five...

i agree with everything Reid said in the last issue . REID YOU ROCK , you
are the spitting image of everything generation X should be (even if you're
not a member) . keep up the good work , and keep throwing in your 2 cents
in .... i'll be ALL ears.

P.S. who the hell cares weather Bf5 iz alternative or not?! , i think it
has just as much bearing (on their music) as their sexuality does!...that
 iz all........bye

Just read in "Dancing About Architecture" at the Austin Chronicle Website
that the BFF European tour is a Caroline Records "showcase" and they will
be playing with, gulp, Sincola, that faux-angst, boring Austin band that
played before them at SXSW. What a horrible pairing. The third band on
the bill is Engine 88, of whom I have no knowledge.

hey this is in response to the gentlemen who were arguing about whether
or not ben folds is indeed alternative and i would just like to say to
each of you: do you like ben folds five? cause if you do then who gives
a rats ass what kind of music they are? they could be the only alaskan
throat-singing outfit thats ever made it in the bigtime and if they
sounded like the ben folds five sound i bet youd still like them... i
realize that in this day and age it is nearly a sin to make a
pop-culture reference without a foundation and that many people feel the
need to 'site' examples but come on. are we really that bored or do we
actually just like to get into dumb arguments? if the answer is you just
like to argue then more power to you but if youre just bored i can suggest
other ways of channeling your free time. practice piano or hey--get on
#benfoldsfive or something hehehehe. also if any high ranking ben folds
five official happens to be reading this i would just like to take this
opportunity to beg you to send them to tulsa ok and/or santa fe this
summer. preferably tulsa because i sure would like to enjoy their live
 show. thanks all!!!

p.s. why does everyone hate uncle walter?? granted its not the best song
on the album and it may even be the worst but i just really dont mind it
and i would listen to it at any opportunity
 oh well...

I resent that comment on DC. Yes, its a sh*thole, but do we have to be
reminded of it? I'd rather see it as a large POTHOLE that the federal
government cant afford to fill. Ben FOlds Five would really improve the
morale in this city. But, hey, they can't be moving here on the basis
that I LIVE HERE and I WANT THEM HERE way too bad, and of course they
owuldn't be here for that reason alone. The mayor could rock out to them.
 Smoke some crack or something.

i don't really see the point if the BFF song is all you're interested in. i
taped their entire modern rock live appearance last september. i wouldn't
mind making a few copies for people, but if i'm overwhelmed with requests,
i'll probably have to ask someone to tree it for me. (i'm not up for doing
that myself.) it includes the album version of 'underground' and they
played 'philosophy,' 'alice childress,' 'julianne' and 'song for the
dumped.' 'song for the dumped' was horribly censored in a really irritating
way. instead of just bleeping out words, they would cut in with 'you're
listening to modern rock live' (or something like that), which certainly
lasts longer than a bleep and therefore obliterated more of the song than
 necessary.

anyway, write me if you're interested.

p.s. someone else mentioned being a fan of the housemartins. in case
anyone's interested, i run 'list for whoever,' the housemartins/beautiful
south internet mailing list. to join, send a message to
lfw-request@bluemarble.net with and empty subject line and simply the word
subscribe in the body of the message. it is NOT in digest form (alas) and
traffic is pretty low. (frank long ago beat me out on # of subscribers. :)
 )

p.s. #2 - this just occurred to me. perhaps we could come up with a name
for this list other than 'ben folds five digest.' that is, if frank is
 interested.

[I think it's about time for both a tape tree and a new name for the
digest. A couple months ago I put out a call for suggested names and got
quite a few from one or two people, but ideally it should be one or two
words related to the band. Some examples of other list names are
 "Introspective" for the Pet Shop Boys; "Whale Mail" for the Rheostatics;
"Minarets", the now-defunct Dave Matthews Band list; and "Bedside Manor"
for Barenaked Ladies. Every time I think about it I come up with "Sports
& Wine" but I'm afraid the & character may mess up some people's mailers.
Maybe we could name it "Sports and Wine"... any other suggestions? -fjm]

well, there is definitely still a scene--more bands than one can count.
More established ones like Superchunk, the Connells (yes they are still
around- they played the azaellea fest. last week), our well known friends,
BF5, and SNZ's, up and comers like JUNE!!!!, Clarissa, and Gravity's Pull,
and bands that play their butts off every week- Trout Band, Anna to the
Infinite Power (sorry i couldn't make it to the show Mitch- had a study
group!!!!! :(), Mike Garrigan, Joby's Opinion, Pipe, Spatula, etc
etc...EVERY place in town has music on any given night of the week- even
He's Not Here has bands now, and Cafe Online and Cafe Driade (saw Durham
Rangers there last night). It's crazy! sometimes it's even hard to
 choose!

I love Marilyn Manson, Kyuss, Deftones, and many amny other things that it
would be totally pointless to list.. I think that BF5 fans are pretty
interesting and diverse... This is probably one the most eclectic mailing
 lists around..

 Hello there!
I know it's been a while since it was last brought up--and I wanted to do a
little research myself before I said anything--but I've got this notion that
"Philosophy" is about something a little less prurient than the size of
"Little Ben." I've always thought it was a touching little number about how
the god Mercury (or Hermes) pushed relentlessly for the development of
civilization because he was scared to be "out in the woods alone." If anyone
out there is better versed in mythology than I am, I'd like to hear what they
 think of that interpretation...
