Subject: 1st album vs. the 2nd

I'm behind on my armchair issues (I get this at work), but I want to speak
my 2 cents about the albums.
I didn't get into the band until I heard BOWCCL on the radio back in
March this year. I got the WAEA cd, really liked it, then saw them live
in April. Blew me away - best band I ever saw. It wasn't until a month
after I saw them live that I found the self-titled album. Then I got
really into that one. I remember asking this girl, who was obviously a
huge fan (I watched as she got Darren's autograph- I was standing right
next to the guy and didn't know it!) which album she liked best. She said
the first one, but the second one was growing on her.
I'll have to say that my fave -by a very slim margin, is the self-titled
one. Ben's piano intros just fill my ears and brain with such joy I can't
stand it! There' much more of a dramatic flair to the self-titled, yet
the little dose of maturity in the second album is refreshing.
This is just my take. My favorite 3 songs are :
1. The Last Polka
2. Philosophy
3. Battle of Who Could Care Less

"I don't want the world, I just want your half." They Might Be Giants,

Ya know, I've always thought I've heard a tinge of Stevie Wonder in Ben Folds Five's music, but I'd never been able to put my finger on the exact spot or song that would prove my point. That is, until tonight. I just hear Tom & Mary for the very first time, and know the evidence is all laid out before me: Ben's falsetto, funky piano, bass, and drums rockin' it out, and even some harmonica action. Methinks that the boys' funky side owes a lot to Stevie Wonder. Comments?

Hey kids,

Are ya all ready for the Cleveland show? Cleveland will be
NUTS on Halloween. So many concerts, so little time. Glad to
say that I made my plans for the BFF show a while ago. Just
some info for my fellow Cleveland BenHeads. Looking for the
ever elusive Lakewood Civic Center? I can and will provide
directions to it for you, just e-mail me privatly with the
town you live in and I'll send you directions ASAP.

PS
I'm going to a They Might Be Giants concert this Thursday.
This just happens to be game five of the World Series. If
the Indians win the series on that night, it will make it
even better.

 Later,
    Steve

Is there a reason why my previous posts have not showed up?! I recently
posted music to One Angry Dwarf, and I let Y'all know about Song For The
Dumped in Japanese on my Webpage!
I've posted each 2 times, and neither have showed up, but yesterday i
posted a messafe about Elvin Bishop just fine!
Oh well, maybe not, I'll try again.

I'm just wondering if BF5 are considering any Northwest (ie. Seattle area)
dates after their Xmas trip over the pond. (Frank? Little help?) Or maybe
they're keeping it off so they can play a show at my college. That would
be nice.... It's kind of like Pearl Jam playing in San Fransisco next
month with the Stones and not in Seattle (Not to open that can of worms
again...) Just wondering....

Hi all--

Wondering if there's been any speculation as to the slightly off-kilter
intro of "Kate". I mean, it's in time, but the drums come in with a
different groove than the way they do it live.

Any comments?

Subject: Meeting the guys

I'm probably one of the very few people on this list who hasn't met the
guys, hasn't talked to the guys, and hasn't gotten her cast signed by
the guys (you're so cool :) I missed the HORDE festival where they had
autograph booths because I'm dumb, and I've never been to a concert
where they were the main band.

But I'm going to the El Rey on the 30th and I was wondering if it was
really that easy to meet them. Or if there was some secret to it.
I don't know, I probably wouldn't know what to say anyways...

Was anyone else surprised to hear that Travis was opening? I told my
friend and he was shocked. Then he assumed it must be another band with
the same name, Travis is really big in England he says. But it's that
band. I've never listened to them personally, so I wouldn't know.

Take care.
Janet.

Hi, all!

Welcome back Anne! Just a quick post:

Just read my latest Entertainment Weekly and they have a short praise for
the boys. They briefly reviewed the Lounge-a-palooza cd and said one of
two highlights was BF5 and "She Don't Use Jelly". The cats at EW like
these guys as earlier in the year, they reviewed WAEA and wrote that BF5
"is everything you want in a rock'n'roll band right now." Amen to that.

To Derek at Bill and Mary College in Virginia: can you hook a brother up
with meeting the boys at the Floodzone? I wanted to hang around after the
Raleigh show but had to drive all the way back to Front Royal at the north
end of the state. I'd appreciate the help.

Later!

Hi there people,

I was wondering if there were any people out there that would be
interested in trading songs on MiniDisc. Basically songs from your part of
the world that are really groovy, but get hardly any exposure. And maybe
if there's a lot of people, we could get a chain happening or something.
That would be cool... But is there anyone out there that would be
interested? I have stacks of music that I would love to share with other
people.

HEY everyone.

I have just joined this list :) and this is my first time writing.

I thought I might introduce myself. I'm 17 and my favourite bands are Ben
Folds Five, Weezer, Ash, Blur, That Dog, and Custard.

I saw Ben Folds Five live a few weeks ago at the LIVID festival and they
kicked ass. I can't explain how good they were, the whole show was great,
his voice, their enthusiasm, their manner and charisma. Something about
their performance just set them apart from other bands. Was there anyone
else from this list who went?

The set list was "Dwarf, Julianne, Steven, Kate, Underground, Pyser,
Dumped and Philosophy" It simply rocked. They didn't play the battle of who
could care less, which was mighty upsetting and the only gripe I have.

Ben Folds stood on this HUGE speaker and did a little cover of this
yippy-yippy yi cover thing (I really can't remember what it's from and I
wanna know!!!) and everyone was singing along. oohhh! fun! After their
finale song (all through which Ben Folds was banging the piano with a stool)
Ben Folds took the piano stool about 2 metres from the piano and threw it.
WHOO!! :) fun fun fun

ok I'm through....
bye bye!
Josie.

P.S anyone who wants to chat about LIVID can email me :)
