i have that SAME bowccl import single, with a one-minute impromptu
champagne supernova, and dr. pyser. i paid 10 or 11 bucks for it at a
really cool store i don't get to often enough. on the cd it has the times of
the songs, of course, and the whole cd is less than 7 minutes long. it
was such a disappointment. i can't fault the people at the store because
there's no way they could have known it, but i was really unhappy to
spend so much on such a waste of time. i mean, i was happy to hear it but
it's really not worth $10 to get the cd version of bowccl, and less than
4 minutes of what we buy import singles for.

First of all, I'd like to say that their hard work paid off and they are
Star 95.7's artists of the month, a radio station in Tampa, Florida.
That's pretty cool.

Second of all, my friend confirmed to me today that Ben Folds Five was in
one of those tiny "teen bop" magazines, because I wouldn't be caught dead
looking at one of those!!! I don't know where they get off putting BFF in
a magazine that includes Hanson and the Backstreet Boys!

Finally, I was wondering if any of you have heard SFTD yet without the
bleepings, like late at night?? I'm thinking about requesting it tomorrow.

Thanks,

Re:
In fact, these questions are about "Smoke":
1- What's this sound at the very beggining of Smoke (is it Ben
scratching the strings of his piano?)
2- What's the instrument just after this sound at the beggining of
Smoke. It sounds like an harmonica to me. Am I right? If yes, who plays
this instrument because it's not written under the lyrics as they
usually do when there's another instrument...

I just got a hold of the promo video of "Sessions At West 54th" (the
PBS series) and "Smoke" is probably the coolest of the 5 songs BF5
perform. The "harmonica" is actually a melodica, which looks like a tiny
piano keyboard, except you make sounds by blowing into a tube at the
top, a la a clarinet-type instrument. (And it sounds sorta like a
harmonica.)
Anyway, in concert, the melodica is mounted above the piano keyboard,
and the tube is extended so that the mouthpiece sits right next to Ben's
mike. He then blows into the tube and plays the melodica with his right
hand, and the piano chords with his left. Then, for the verses, he does
indeed reach *inside* the piano and scratches the piano strings. Pretty
damn talented, if you ask me. And I thought I was cool when I could play
the bass part to Rush's "Yyz" with one hand and the keyboard part with
the other... :)

Kinda sorta awestruck,
rICH

Okay, it seems that everyone on the Armchair has posted their opinion of
Ben Folds Five's selling out nature. I have only noticed ONE person
(whose name I shall withhold; IT WASN'T ME!) who said that they sold out,
which triggered about 8 Armchairs (if not more) FULL of replys to how
dumb this person was, how Ben Folds Five didn't sell out, etc. & it's
still going on about 3 weeks, if not more, after the orgininal was
posted(the original posted around the time that the news of the Godzilla
soundtrack song came out). NOBODY HERE THINKS THAT THEY ARE SELL-OUTS!!
Even if they do, they can't even post to this here Armchair with their
feelings without having themselves put up to much slandering.

LET'S STOP THE "NOT SELL-OUTS" POSTS!!!!! Nobody thinks they are, so
nobody needs to prove their point! Wow! That's great! This idea isn't
original at all & I'm sure that over half of the Armchair has felt the
same way at one point or another. I'm just one of the first to say it.
PLEASE, IF YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE A POST ABOUT BEN FOLDS FIVE NOT SELLING
OUT, RE-READ IT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU AREN'T POSTING THE OBVIOUS! WE ALL
KNOW THAT THEY ARE STILL MAKING GREAT MUSIC & THEY HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING
LIKE SELLING OUT!!!! Damn it, I'm making a hypocrite out of myself. I
better end it.

Fond, but not in love.....
Steve!
who's even more agitated because
BF5 is coming to Grand Rapids, MI,
which is over 3 hours away from his
house on a school night.....

BTW - Please nobody respond to the Armchair with "I agree with Steve" or
"Steve is a big shit head!", lest we have another epidemic of this size.

Hello fellow Chairers:
This is something I should have written long ago, but it just slipped my
mind until now.
Back in February or maybe late January, I was watching a show on VH1
(doesn't play as much rapcrap as MTV) about bands that got their start in '97
and we would be seeing a lot more of them in '98. I don't remember what it
was called. Our Boys were one of these bands.
As they were going over their three albums, the VH1 dudes said that WAEA
was the newest release with the "Hit single Brick". Now correct me if I'm
wrong, but didn't NBP come out AFTER WAEA, making NBP BF5's newest release?
I understand that the VH1 dudes are trying to help out Boys out by putting
them on TV and letting the viewers know where to get the "hit single Brick",
but c'mon! If they're gonna' do it, do it right!!!!

Actually, that instrument is a melodion. It's like a hand held keyboard
that has a mouthpiece you blow into. It kinda sounds like a harmonica
or a mouth harp. I know this because I'm a big nerd who has one. When I
first saw BF5 I noticed that he used a melodion on Smoke and Steven's
last night in town (when a horn section and clarinet are not easil
accesible). I thought " wait, I have one of those in the garage... my
grandpa gave it to me years ago"
So I went home, and figured out Smoke and Steven's... by ear.
If anyone ever wants to hear Genius at work, just get a hold of me and
I'll play the sweet, sweet sounds of the coolest instrument known to

questions (and I apologize in advance if these are repeats to all you list

1) Who is singing the second verse of She Don't Use Jelly?

2) Those of you that own this beutiful cd, where did you get it and do you
know how much you paid for it? Want to see if I was ripped off in the

Thanks.

Subject: I agree with Nikki digest 917

Hey all,

Being an aussie fan of BF5 for nearly two years now I can only agree
with Nikki and what she said in Digest #917. Two years ago Ben, Darren and
Jesse weren't even recognised here at all. Now its a different matter. Now
they're pop stars like a lot of other bands and performers. The difference
for me lies in the fact that not one of the three ever "sold out". They
haven't changed their "live music taping for nonprofit" policy. Their songs
still make my emote - especially Selfless, Cold and Composed which makes me
cry everytime I hear it (at the very least inside). When I saw them here in
Melbourne at the Prince of Wales (a pretty grimy Pub venue) they really
enjoyed themselves and played upto the audience. They are without a doubt
the most true form of a "rock band" that I have seen in all my 25 years. I
wish Ben, Darren and Jesse all the success they trully deserve. After being
on the Armchair for 12 months now I;ve read a lot of stories about how they
struggled to get there. FUCKEN HELL GOOD FOR THEM!!!! To everyone here who
says they've sold out : take a good long look at yourselves. Maybe you've
sold out, or maybe you just needed someone to worship and the shine has worn
off for you. Well good and fine, bugger off then and let the rest of us
really, trully enjoy the music that the Ben Folds Five can make happen.
Magic is a wonderful thing and will survive derision and arrogance for time
eternal. To the band : Woody Guthry would be proud! Stay True and ignore
the wankers who knock you. I among countless other still find something new
and wonderful in nearly every piece of music you produce. Your CDs will be
with my collection always.

PS: excuse the length....but I really think that its time someone who gave a
shit had a say. :)

Stay Cool Y'all
