because eventhough it is not bf5 related, you will all pick through this
to find something to complain about, so here goes,

DO YOU ALL REALIZE HOW OBNOXIOUS YOU ARE?

i signed on to this list because i like bf5 and i was disappointed with
the pine knob show after seeing them at a tiny club well over a year ago.
i just wanted my faith in the band renewed after the dry performance they
gave earlier this week.

anyway, i found this list and signed on just to hear a bunch of little
brats complaining about everything and the kitchen sink. now, i am not
going to hold it against the band, but i just thought you guys should
know that you

ACTING LIKE 5-YEAR-OLDS IS HURTING BF5'S OVERALL FANBASE

because real fans, that is if anyone besides yourselves is allowed to be
considered a real fan, who only want to discuss the band are turned off
by a bunch of....well, people like you.

GOOD LUCK GETTING THROUGH LIFE IF THIS IS THE WAY YOU TREAT TOTAL
STRANGERS, NOT TO MENTION A BAND YOU CLAIM TO RESPECT.

auf wiedersehen

Hey all (including the mighty RF'ers),

I'm looking for anyone who has extra tickets for the Beck/Ben Folds
Five/Elliot Smith
concert at Jones Beach on June 11th. Somehow I missed this one until now
and I'd hate to miss it. Email me privately if you can help!

Well, It's far too bad that we don't have Smarch here in Utah. Though I
hear that Smarch weather is horrid and curses form dead janitors named
Willy happen a lot in Smarch. Springer is horrid anyway and I'm glad the
boys aren't really going to be on it.
I too was a witness to the spilt second of Brick with "Push It" playing
in the background. Weird. And the other BFF stuff from last night. I'm
done now.

Well...

NBFFC: (and btw... great idea!)
I for one agree with Scott. I thought it would be fun to come back for a
little while to the MA and hang out with a larger group of BFF fans but
there seems to be some confusion as to my reasons. Let me digress for a
moment...

1.) I am not interested in being "smarter than thou". Thanks for the
flattery, Ginger, though! *grin* I do like to stretch my vocabulary,
though... and I enjoy writing in general. I think that shows in the content
and structure of my posts. I don't understand why that offended some of
you... whihc leads me to my next point:

2.) I am not out to offend anyone. I do not consider myself a better BFF
fan. I truly enjoy the "newbies" -- they pump me up again. For example...
the girl who gave Ben all her pictures and some flowers: that psyched me up
to go see them. It's like being married and seeing a new couple who are
making cow eyes* at each other... it makes you fall in love all over again.
Oh yeah... and for the record: I know what the Bhagavad Gita is. I just
didn't want to say what it was for fear that that person would be
embarrassed. That's why I pointed her to Frank's website.

3.) While sometimes this list can be annoying to anyone (I'm sure this post
is annoying a lot of you right now) it is a different vibe from the RF. That
doesn't make it better or worse for everyone... just different. So before
you scream: "Granny is out to get us... she hates us!" -- I ask that you
jsut pause for a moment and think about it. Have any of my posts seemed
truly tasteless? Have I seemed like I was filled with hate for any of you?
No... I am being truly low in sarcasm.

4.) The phrases any of us use are always up for grabs... After all, I copped
Bentent and BeFeF... although I did create BeFeFan. And today I copped
NBFFC... so feel free to use any of them at any time... once again, I'm not
trying to sem superior at all.

So that's about it. Can't you take my posts in the spirit that they are
delivered? All in good fun, I say... all in good fun. Of course, it is your
prerogative to decide that I am lying to you and that this is all a double
secret infiltration of the Magical Armchair to... ummmm... what is it that
we would be doing... ummm... take over the world? Naaaahhhhhhh... ummmmm...
to infiltrate the Magical Armchair! That's it! How fiendishly clever of me.
Now on to:

Bentent: News I can share: Robert, in a radio interview in Boston, mentioned
that after the European leg of the summer tour, they will be heading off to
Australia and Japan for a "short" trip (his word, not mine). And then they
were heading back stateside to cut their new album.

Later!

Hey, On June 3rd I attended the Ben Folds Five & Beck show in Toronto.
I was extremly disturbed because Ben only played about 7 songs. I was
aware that they were opening but it should have been the other way
around. Beck should have been opening for Ben Folds Five. Althought
there set was short is was extermly good.
For all of you going to see Ben with Beck on the remaining dates enjoy
Ben Folds 5 while there up there because they aren't up there for to
long.

Subject: I was a Ben Folds fan TEN years ago!!!

Now that I have your attention, listen up. Yes, I first heard about
Ben ten years ago when I started a new job and sat over the
cubicle wall from Scotty Folds. (This year we get our 10-year
bonuses: $100-- woo hoo!) I learned all about her two, very
talented, musical sons. It's been fun watching their successes.
I remember when I used to try to look up tour dates on the web
to help Scotty keep up with where Ben was currently touring and
if you did a search on Yahoo, you'd only get 2 or 3 hits for Ben
Folds Five. One, of course, was Frank's page. Today if you do
a search, you get something like 102,000 hits. Amazing!!

What's the purpose of this rambling? Maybe it's because I feel
I have AGE seniority (if not Armchair seniority) over most of you!!
I'm 35. Don't be so shocked… you'll be here before you know it!

Can't we all just get along?? I agree with someone earlier who
said they thought the reason everyone's fighting is because now
that Ben Folds Five is mainstream, there's not as much "new"
information to share in the mailing list. I mean, how many new
set lists from the current tour do we really need?? (I'm not
complaining about posting set lists-I'm just saying there's no
real surprises at this point!) So, instead of sharing fun
tidbits of new information, all people can think of doing is flaming
each other. It doesn't help much, either, that a few people
on the Rockford Files decided to plan an "assault" (their word,
not mine) on us.

For those of you who enjoy flaming each other and starting fights,
why don't you create a new mailing list, something to the effect of
"Magical Armchair Versus Rockford Files NON-Ben Folds Five
Content Mailing List."

Isn't it ironic (thanks, Alanis) that by complaining about the
arguing, I've probably started a new argument?!

Now I'll be quiet and go back to lurking.

what in the hell makes you so damn full of yourselves? we're childish just
because we haven't been on the armchair as long as you. where as you go around
proclaiming your self-richousness (excuse the spelling) okay you cocky
bastard, whos the childish one? it doesn't matter how long you've been on the
armchair and it doesn't matter how you got into the band, i loathe brickheads
as much as the next person, but i heard the song in october, went out and
bought the cd, realized hey these guys are pretty cool, went out and bought
the one before it realized it was on of the greatest thing i've ever heard,
time went by i got aol found the armchair and discovered bootleg trading, and
have since accumlatated a pretty nice bootleg list. and they came out with
naked baby photos, which is great. okay you holier than thou bastards does
that make me any less of a fan? or perhaps its the fact that im 16? im sorry
if i haven't known about them since '95. half of you fellow chairers found
about about them on accident, does that make you any less of a fan? of course
not. in the end it doesn't matter how you got into them, in the end all that
matters is that you're into the music, not the fact that you've known about
the music longer.

Subject: comming up for air...

hello.
i am not an "old-skooler."
nor am i an enraged armchairian.
i am what you might call a full-time MA scuba diver.
i've been lurking for several hundred issues of the MA, and have made a point
to read many of the archives.
been reading up on the RF too.
visited too many websites to count.
so i at least have some semblance of many of the people involved in the
current debate.
if there is one thing i have learned in my time here, its that fivers are all
very assertive, sententious, and..well..stuborn. i do not think that this is
a bad thing.
let me just try to outline my way thru what has been happening-
the RF'ers are here because someone told them the MA was full of fluff and
meaningless drivel. perhaps their insults- in good fun, of course- were meant
to silence, or at least educate the people spewing this nonsense.
many armchairians, in the red-hot rage that they are so well known for,
have taken personal offense. what perplexes me is that the chair-people
witing these posts are the ones who should be taking the least offense. these
are the people who made the chair tolerable before the mass assault by the RF.
but in true fiver-fashion, they posted exactly what they felt. after the
great schism between the RF'ers and the MA (ok, its a little
disproportionate), there was still a movement for reform on the chair itself.
i guess you could call these people lutherans.. i suppose they
felt insulted that their efforts were going unrecognized. this is not at all
true. the MA scuba-divers (and i know there are a lot of us) truly do
appreiciate your efforts, and that is why we are still here. we equally
aprieciate the added wisdom of the RF'ers. at any rate, i ask you all, chair-
people and RF'ers alike, to pause for a moment and give yourselves a pat on
the back- you are not the problem. still though, has anyone noticed the drop
in the ammount of fluff mail recently? just an observation.. so i guess the
RF plan has worked to an extent. it has also produced the deleterious side
affect of offending many normally good-natured chair-people. if all the
poeple who are posting flames now could get into some hate-free conversations
here, i think the MA would be a wonderful place to reside. and maybe, just
maybe you'll hear from more divers. (if you've found me to be completely
obnoxious, you may not consider this to be a good thing. but let me say, as
any fiver would- i don't care.) i guess the point is that i think we have the
makings of some mentally stimulating banter, here! don't deprive it of its
chance for life!
~oscar

by the way- if for some reason you should wish to flame me, i have rigged your
computers to spit at you.

Subject: I'm Simply A Fan

Hello All,

I found my way to the Armchair just last month with the help of a new
friend Meg, who I met out at the Vegas show. I was all jazzed about
hearing the stories of fellow fans all around the country, their
takes on shows, new singles, TV appearances and what not.

After nine shows, from London to Vegas and the rest in the Mid-West,
I consider myself a great supporter of Ben Folds Five the performing
group. You must all agree that the live set is Ben, Darren and
Robert at their best. My first show was in London last summer. Ben
was jumping around his piano, hitting beach balls with the audience,
they even had a set of strings with them to increase my awe. Well,
the next day I went to Tower and bought everything I could find on
the group.

Ever since then I've tired to bring a virgin Ben Folds Fiver along
with me to shows and I watch them convert to the ways of the BFF
masses. Darren asked my Ben Folds mentor, Calvin, if she ever got
sick and tired of going to show after show hearing the same songs.
She replied that the shows take her to "another state of mind" which
gives her a bliss and a chance to forget all else in her world. We
love the live Ben Folds and our credit cards can prove it! Damn
debt!

After my seventh show Doug let me backstage to meet the guys in
Vegas. It was great time. I chatted with all three and was happy to
see how cool and down-to-earth they were. I even chatted a bit with
Robert out in the Hard Rock Casino. Another great time!

That's my BFF story and that's what is interesting to me. What's
your story?

I'm simply a fan, no better or worse than any of you and
I don't care to size myself up with any of you. We're all fans and
that makes us friends so let's keep the Digest strong on Ben Folds
Five content and get rid of all the other crap no? Thanks.

Over and Out...

Chrish
